Entry requirements depend on your nationality, purpose of travel, and the rules in place at the time of your trip. For many leisure travellers, an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) or other travel authorization may be required before travelling to Sri Lanka.
We recommend checking the latest requirements through Sri Lanka's official immigration and government channels before making your journey. Your passport should also have sufficient validity and meet the applicable entry requirements.
Chiford Travels can provide general visa guidance and help you understand what you need to prepare, so you can begin your journey with confidence.
Sri Lanka can be enjoyed throughout the year, but different parts of the island experience their best conditions at different times.
The south and west coasts are generally popular from around December to March, when conditions are often favourable for beach holidays. The east coast tends to offer better beach conditions during approximately April to September. The central hill country can be cooler and mistier, creating a very different experience from the tropical coastline.
The beauty of a tailor-made journey is that we can shape your route around the time of year you're visiting, combining regions where the weather and experiences are most suitable for your dates.
The official currency of Sri Lanka is the Sri Lankan Rupee (LKR).
International cards are widely accepted at established hotels, restaurants, supermarkets, and many tourist-oriented businesses. However, carrying some local currency is useful when visiting smaller shops, local markets, rural areas, temples, roadside stops, or places where card payments may not be available.
It is also helpful to keep smaller denominations available for everyday purchases and tipping. Your Chiford travel team can help you understand where cash may be useful during your journey.
Sri Lanka's temples and sacred places are deeply respected, and visitors are expected to dress modestly.
As a general guide, shoulders and knees should be covered, particularly when visiting Buddhist and Hindu temples. You may also be asked to remove shoes, socks, hats, or other footwear before entering certain sacred areas.
Photography may be restricted in some locations, particularly around statues, ceremonies, or specific religious spaces. Always follow the instructions provided at the site.
Your chauffeur-guide will let you know what to expect before visiting important religious and cultural sites, so you can experience them respectfully and comfortably.
For most private journeys, a private vehicle with a professional driver-guide is one of the most comfortable and flexible ways to explore Sri Lanka.
It allows you to travel at your own pace, make scenic stops, adjust your schedule, and reach places that may be difficult to access by public transport. It is particularly useful when combining several regions during one journey.
Sri Lanka's scenic trains are also a wonderful way to experience the hill country, especially around the tea-growing regions. For short distances, tuk-tuks can be a fun and authentic way to get around.
We can combine different transport experiences where appropriate, creating a journey that is both comfortable and memorable rather than relying on just one way of travelling.
Sri Lankans are generally warm and welcoming, and a friendly smile goes a long way.
When eating traditional food by hand, the right hand is traditionally used. If you're invited into someone's home or offered food, accepting graciously is considered a warm gesture of respect. In more formal restaurants and hotels, standard Western dining etiquette is perfectly normal.
When visiting someone's home, religious site, or culturally significant place, observe the local customs and follow the guidance of your host or guide.
Tipping is not always compulsory, but it is a common way to show appreciation for good service. Drivers, guides, hotel staff, and restaurant staff may be given a tip when you feel they have provided exceptional service.
Most importantly, approach local communities with curiosity, patience, and respect. A little cultural awareness can turn a simple interaction into one of the most memorable parts of your journey.
It starts with a conversation.
